Tennis Canada lost a friend, colleague, mentor and cherished person on Wednesday with the tragic and sudden passing of Bruno Agostinelli Jr.

A national coach for U14 players at Tennis Canada’s national junior training program in Toronto, Bruno was a leader, teacher and confidante to many of the country’s promising junior players. Bruno was a former player himself; he was a member of Canada’s Davis Cup team and a top-ranked NCAA player for the University of Kentucky. He retired in 2009 and became an integral part of Tennis Canada’s coaching staff shortly thereafter.

“This news has shocked and saddened our entire organization and the tennis community today,” said Kelly Murumets, president and CEO for Tennis Canada. “Bruno was simply a terrific person. Humble about his accomplishments, caring and kind towards his players, and passionate about his job, his life and his family. This is a truly devastating loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with Bruno’s family and everyone who loved him dearly, as we did.”

Bruno’s career achievements include capturing a fifth and deciding rubber for Canada at a Davis Cup tie versus Peru in 2009; reaching No. 2 on the NCAA rankings and being named University of Kentucky’s male athlete of the year; finishing his career as an All-American; and winning multiple provincial and national junior championships.

In January 2016, Bruno was inducted into the Niagara Falls Sports Wall of Fame in recognition of his tennis career.

A memorial fund has been set up in Bruno’s name. All donations made will go to help provide care and assistance to his beloved family. To make a donation in Bruno’s honour, visit https://www.gofundme.com/brunoagostinelli.
